Questions & answers
What is a surface wall clock?
"Surface Wall Clock" is the trademarked term for a dial-less clock with numerals that directly attach to the wall. The clock movement is located inside the core, which contains a battery and powers the clock.
Is Nautilus accurate?
Nautilus is powered by a SEIKO 44505M quartz clock movement, which is among the most accurate in the industry. On a fresh battery, you can expect +/- 15 second per month of drift, increasing up to +/- 30 seconds right before the battery fully depletes. Instead of pulsing once per second and making a ticking sound, the movement pulses 16 times per second and generates a smooth sweeping motion that's virtually 100% silent.
How difficult is it to install Nautilus?
We've designed Nautilus to be as easy to install as possible. The numerals and clock core attach to the wall using peel-and-stick adhesives. For customers with heavily-textured walls, we sell an optional installation kit that includes drywall anchors, screws, a drill bit, and interior adhesive.
To help perfectly align each numeral relative to each other, we've developed a proprietary carbon tracing template. Simply position the template where you wish to install Nautilus, trace where indicated, and the critical alignment marks will be transferred onto the wall. Then it's just a matter of peel-and-stick, and you're done!
Do I need the optional install kit?
It depends. Most customers install Nautilus using the built-in self-adhesive. The installation kit is only necessary if your walls are heavily textured and won't readily accept bonding. You can purchase the installation kit separately after your initial purchase. Learn more ›
Can I remove Nautilus without damaging my wall?
While it’s impossible to find an adhesive that’s both long lasting and leaves 100% no damage, our experiments with removing the numerals from drywall have shown that if removed properly, there should be little or usually no damage to the wall surface. We recommend using a hair dryer to apply gentle heat to the adhesive area before gently lifting each numeral.
Can I adjust the size of the clock by spacing the numerals closer/farther apart?
Technically there’s nothing preventing you from doing so, but we don’t recommend it.
When we were designing the product, we had to choose a diameter for the clock and after much trial and error, we settled on 21 inches (53 cm). This is based on a typical residential ceiling height of around 96 inches (8 ft, or 2.43 m). It turns out that the ceiling height is what determines how large the clock can be—too big causes the wall to feel claustrophobic and too small negates the built-in visual effect. From this dimension of 21 inches, we scaled the numeral height into proportion, using numerous clock and watch faces for reference. Therefore, enlarging or minimizing the size of Nautilus by spacing out the numerals different would ruin this proportion. Furthermore, the carbon tracing template was designed for the 21 inch diameter, and wouldn’t work for smaller or larger sizes.
